We get it- you're a Minnesota resident who is excited - or at least curious - about using cannabis legally under the new state law that became effective on August 1st, 2023. But you won't be able to find cannabis at dispensaries until the State creates an entirely new government agency to approve businesses to sell cannabis.
When will that happen? Nobody knows for sure. Most agree that it won't happen until at least 2025.
Until then, the only way to legally possess and use cannabis in Minnesota is if you grow it yourself.
The new Minnesota law allows residents to grow up to 8 plants in their house, 4 of which can be mature, flowering plants. If growing plants indoors sounds daunting, let us address some common questions:
I've never grown a plant. Do you really expect to grow a plant indoors?
Yes! Growing plants indoors using hydroponics is not just easy, it's the future of farming and food production! Using our products, you can grow cannabis in a fully-enclosed, climate-controlled tent using automated controllers to take care of the water for you. You can even remotely monitor everything over the internet from anywhere in the world!
Won't it smell? I don't want my house to smell like a skunk.
It won't smell at all! We'll provide you with a high-quality air filtration system featuring an activated carbon odor filter.
Will I be able to grow enough to support my cannabis use?
Yes. Cannabis plants thrive when grown in hydroponics. Yields of 5 ounces per plant are common, and yields over 10 ounces per plant are possible!
Let's crunch some numbers. Like we mentioned earlier, in Minnesota you can grow a total of 8 plants at a time, 4 of which can be flowering. Most cannabis strains take about 4 months to grow from seed to harvest, spending the first 2 months in vegetative growth and the last 2 months in flowering growth. This means that if you stagger 4 plants every 2 months, you can harvest 4 plants every 2 months. 4 plants growing 5 ounces of cannabis each means you could easily be personally producing 20 ounces every 2 months! Careful- the new law also states that you cannot possess more than 2 pounds (32 ounces) of flower.
Those numbers assume you have the space to grow 8 plants simultaneously, the money to fund the equipment, and the need to grow that much pot. Most of our customers grow only 1 or 2 plants at a time.
This equipment is expensive! Why don't I just buy from a dispensary or find "a guy"?
First, cannabis purchased at small quantities is expensive, both from dispensaries or the black market. There's also the fact that Minnesota dispensaries don't exist yet, and buying from the black market is illegal and dangerous.
When looking at other legal states, the average cost per ounce of high-quality cannabis is $318. Most customers do not purchase by the ounce, but end up paying even more buying at smaller quantities.
Let's use the math from our previous question. Our customers can produce 20 ounces of flower every 2 months. Purchased at a dispensary at the national average price, that would be $6360! If you grew the legal maximum every 2 months (which is certainly possible with hydroponics), that would be 32 ounces... worth a whopping $10,176 if purchased at the dispensary!
Now let's be more reasonable and assume you can't consume 10 ounces of cannabis a month. Even if your needs are just 1 ounce per month, you're still consuming nearly $4000 worth of cannabis a year, and that is assuming you purchase it by the ounce!
When you consider the numbers, growing your own cannabis isn't just the only legal way to get weed in Minnesota right now... it is by far the better option financially when compared to purchasing cannabis from dispensaries.
